Engine Number 1 shut down in midburn today because both primary and backup systems reported overheating in a high-pressure turbo fuel pump; computers shut the engine down to avoid danger of explosion, and mission control instructed the crew to burn the other two engines at 104% rated thrust for the duration of their fuel. At the same time, some of the hydrazine fuel for the OMS was dumped to lighten the load. There is plenty of OMS fuel left for reentry and most of the scientific experiments, and NASA is confident that the mission can continue for its full seven days.
