<MS>I would like to see you do that with an HPFS drive every
<MS>day, have fun
<MS>backing up your new files every time before you 'shut
<MS>down'.

The CTRL-ALT-DEL handler in OS/2 performs an OS/2 shutdown call, which
satisfies all HPFS-drives. Try yourself to press CTRL-ALT-DEL and watch
the harddisk LED at the same time.
You may also notice that the AUTOCHECK is NOT performed as if you just
powered off the system.
