[comp.os.os2] CodeView and OS/2 v1.1

jhl@frith.egr.msu.edu (02/07/90)

Novice question:

I've installed OS/2 v1.1 with Presentation Manager. I then installed
Microsoft C v5.1. During the compiler install I accepted its default
suggestion that I only install the protected mode version.

Now when I try to start Codeview (cvp.exe), I get the message:

SYS0197: Microsoft Operating System/2 is not presently configured to
run this application.

I spent about two hours digging through the OS/2 manuals and the
compiler manuals but to no avail. If someone out there could tell me
what I've missed, I'd be eternally grateful.

Set IOPL=YES in config.sys... (Yes, it is documented somewhere, in
OS/2 1.0... ;-)

As several people have e-mailed this to me a group thanx to everyone.
Too bad this doesn't appear in the Codeview docs....

I had the same problem. The incantation to fix it is to add the line:
	IOPL=YES
to your CONFIG.SYS. It seems that the kernel does not support debuggers,
and still hardware has to be accessed directly.

The kernel supports debuggers using the DOSPTRACE facility.
However, codeview needs to be able to access video memory directly,
due to some potential deadlock problems when debugging a program that
uses the VIOCALLS.DLL.

That is why IOPL must be set to YES.

Actually in this case typing "help sys0197"
will be very informative.

"help sys0197"

will tell you to edit the CONFIG.SYS file
and add IOPL=YES.
