[comp.os.os2] Installing OS/2 on a SCSI drive

fredb@llama.rtech.UUCP (Fred Buechler [Devil Mountain Consulting]) (03/10/90)

Hello Net.World,

I am trying install OS/2 1.1 (89039) on my AST Premium/386 machine. It
has a 150 Mb Maxtor disk with an 800 series Maxtor SCSI controller. The install
disk boots and I get past the first couple info screens, then I get a big
red screen full of text telling me that FDISK has failed somehow. I can get
the exact failure codes out of the install.log file, but they really don't
tell you that much (unless you're MS and have the code book handy :-)).

Does anyone know a workaround for this problem? Any and all suggestions
appreciated. Thanks Much.

Fred.

OS/2 (and all other multitasking os's) don't use the INT 13H BIOS
interface provided on most SCSI interface cards. OS/2 has built into it
only drivers to talk directly to ST506 interface hard disks.

If the maker of your SCSI controller does not provide a OS/2 device
driver for your interface card, you're out of luck. You'll need
minimally a different controller. I believe Adaptec makes a SCSI
controller that presents a ST506 interface look to the OS. (it
internally converts ST506 to SCSI).
