I've been trying to install Word 5.0 on my OS/2 1.2 SE system I haven't been able to get it to install successfully. After all files are copied, when I try to fire up WORD I get errors that it cannot complete loading the application in OS/2 In the DOS box, WORD prompts me to insert the PROGRAM 2 diskette into the A: drive (obviously, this is the reason that OS/2 cannot complete loading). The problem seems to be that Word's SETUP is not recognizing that I'm installing this on an OS/2 system. As an aside, SETUP assumes that installation is from the A: drive. I have a 3.5" A: and 5.25" diskettes, and just copied all the files from one medium to the other so I could install the *** program. Anyone recognize this problem and know how to solve it? I'm not convinced that just changing my 5.25 back to A: for the period of the installation is going to help. files

I believe that your particular problem is that IOPL=WORD (or IOPL=YES) is not being set in your config.sys, which is one of the config.sys changes made when running Setup under OS/2. One problem that you're having is that you should be running Setup from OS/2, rather than from the DOS box, if you plan on running Word 5.0 under OS/2. Setup is a dual-mode .exe, but there are some slight differences in its operation under DOS and OS/2. Under DOS, you are allowed to choose video drivers that are not supported under OS/2. As well, autoexec.bat and config.sys modifications (backups are made!) will be incorrect for OS/2 operation. Finally, under OS/2, the main .exe and the overlay files are combined to form one large .exe, which is not required under DOS (will be done if sufficient disk space is available). Note that installing Word 5.0 under OS/2 will allow you to use it from both OS/2 protect mode and from within the DOS box, should you so choose. The Word 5.0 Setup program assumed that you were running from drive A:. There are two workarounds: 1) Call Microsoft Product Support at (206) 462-WORD as the latest Setup program allows installation from drive B:. They should also be able to provide a 3.5" version of Word if you so preferred. 2) Copy files to 3.5" media. This is how you should combine the disks: 3.5" Disk name 5.25" disks Program Disk Program 1 & Program 2 Spell/Thesaurus Disk Spell Disk & Thesaurus Disk Utilities Disk Utilities 1 & Utilities 2 Printer Disk Printer 1 & Printer 2 NOTE: Create two subdirectories called \PRINTER1 and \PRINTER2 and copy the 5.25" disk contents into the subdirectories, except for printers.doc which should be in the root directory. Utilities/Printer Disk Utilities 3 & Utilities/Printer Hope this helps... -- Jim Walsh microsoft!jimw@uunet.uu.net Microsoft Corporation uunet!microsoft!jimw The views expressed herein are not necessarily mine, let alone Microsoft's...
