[comp.os.os2] ZEOS 386SX Info and OS/2 thereon

dbl@cs.wvu.wvnet.edu (David Lawson) (06/13/90)

I recently posted a question about OS/2 1.2 running on a Zeos 386SX
and I got a lot of responses and questions about my machine so this
is a little summary/zeos info/thanks to the folks that sent me info.

Ok, the consensus is that OS/2 1.2 will run on just about any clone
386sx if it has a couple meg of memory. In particular, I did get mail
saying that it will run on AMI bios machines (like a Zeos) and that
it would run on the Zeos machine in particular. The info I got back
sounded good enough that I am going to give OS/2 a try. If it does in
fact work (I REALLY suspect it will) then I'll post a follow up detailing
some of my grief and victories.

The rest of my responses were people wanting to know if the Zeos 386sx is
any good. Well I really liked the Zeos folks though getting hold of
them on the 800 # is tedious in the middle of the day. I had them send
me a specially configured machine (no video, 2 meg) and I still got it
within a couple weeks. The machine is a real sweetheart. There are
several free slots and spare power connections to go around. I recently
put in a second hard drive (toshiba 65 meg) and the process was relatively
painless since zeos has the first hard drive mounted in a removable
case on the right side of the machine. The case comes out, you slip the
second drive in and plug in the cords. The case is equipped with
a second fan for the hard drives and 6 drive bays, 2 5.25 exposed, 2
3.5 exposed and 2 in the hard drive holder that apparently would hold
5.25 " drives. The machine runs like a champ. It is 16MHz but the
si is nearly 20. It comes with 2 serial, 1 parallel and a game port.
I have put a couple pieces of hardware in and have had no configuration
or installation problems. The case even has a tasteful power switch.
The parts inside are actually name brands, like an adaptec controller
and a friend has one that came with a hercules monocard. I have been
very statisfied and have no problem recommending them. As far as this
machine and OS/2 well, I'll know for sure within a week or so.

Good luck, and thanks for the email.
