I've been reading here and in Info-World that the new costs for OS/2 1.3 SE is $150, and that there is an upgrade from IBM Dos for $99. I've alsoe read that I should be able to get an educational Discount on that, and that IBMs standard for Educational discounts is -40% of list. I called our Campus Personal Computing center to find out if I could buy one of these two deals. (And I mean DEALS) The person I talked to yesterday didn't have any data on OS/2 she could give me as they don't stock it on the store, but she did tell me that Dos 4.01 goes for $125, so she thought my guess on procing was off. This morning I got a call back for information on what I wanted. (This person was one who deals with organization there) I told her that I was looking to get OS/2 1.3 SE, and maybe the DOS upgrade. She told me that there was not a DOS Upgrade, but the only listing she could pull up was for EE OS/2, and it was $695. The question is: Is there a DOS UPgrade? If so, what is the difference in packaging from buying the whole package new? If there is not a Dos Upgrade, What is the actual price of (Currently available) OS/2? Is IBM's Educational policy a strict -40% like I've been lead to believe? Well, Wim, you're not the only one having these problems. I asked my university bookstore the same questions (how, when, where, how much) and they got back to me the next day, after calling IBM, and told me that IBM says they can sell the Extended Version with a student discount for $159 (or so) and that the Standard Version has been discontinued. I told the person at the campus computer store that I could buy it from Computerland for $150 (the normal version) and that there ought to be a 40% discount for students. He told me that was the best he could do. It could be that $150 - 40% makes the price so low that IBM isn't willing to sell it and thus isn't making the new, low price available to universities. This is pure speculation, but it's possible and it fits the data I've seen. It is true that you can get the SE for $150 or $100 with upgrade from DOS, but anyone can get that price. I'm at home right now, so I don't have facts and figures re: OS/2 1.3 EE EE costs about $650 straight, $51 less? w/ upgrade. There _will_ be a free upgrade to 2.0 when it is released, for new purchasers? of 1.3, and for owners of any prior version as well. I'll prepare summaries of download info for posting this coming Monday EDT and I will also post the IBM Briefings such as I've received. cheers terry kane ...!emory!slammer!tok +1-404-841-4881 days edt

I don't know if it's the same in the US, but here in Canada it often takes a week or so for price changes to get from the "announcements" into the online price list, which is what your dealer will have checked (or what somebody at IBM checked on their behalf). Unless they are specifically told to look in the "new announcements" database, they might miss a change. I just checked IBMLink in Canada and the price changes have made it into the list here now. In Canada the prices are $179 regular, $112 educational (which is about 40% off). There doesn't appear to be an educational price for the DOS upgrade to OS/2 (at least, the online price list lists the upgrade as $102 regular, $283 educational, which doesn't seem to be much of a deal). So I'd suggest you talk to your dealer again, get them to check the price again. Here are the "CANADIAN" prices for OS/2 and upgrades. This comes from the IBM Announcement of April 17/91, that is in my hand (i.e. Document Number A91-289) OS/2 Standard Edition $179. OS/2 Extended Edition 822. Upgrades -------- Standard Edition from DOS 3.x, 4.x $127. Extended Edition from DOS 3.x, 4.x 815. Remember....these ase CANADIAN prices. But CAN $127. sure sounds like US $99. and CAN $179. sure sounds like US $150. I have more detailed pricing if the net is interested. By the way, the prices I gave in my last article were for v1.3, which is the only version that is out now. Expect v2.0 in the fourth quarter 91. And no, there was no mention in this announcement of any free upgrades to v2.0.
