[comp.os.os2] Super VGA drivers for OS/2, and more news of OS/2 2.0

wayne@csri.toronto.edu (Wayne Hayes) (05/01/91)

Where can I get a high res driver for my Super VGA screen while running OS/2?

I have a generic 386 clone, and the VGA card manual is even no-name ("OEM
VGA, it says..."). I'm running the Beta version of OS/2 2.0 (see below
before jumping up with wide eyes), and *any* previous version of VGA
drivers should work. All I have is an OS/2 1.1 800x600 driver that looks
terrible.

Yes, I said OS/2 2.0 Beta version. That's because I'm an IBM employee
(actually a student intern for 16 months), and I can't find any internal
Super VGA drivers. I think there might have been some included with
previous official releases, but I'm not sure.

And since I'm the one who started the "Here come OS/2 2.0 -- READ THIS,
you'll be impressed" thread, I'll have that review of OS/2 2.0 that I
promised out soon. It seems pretty impressive so far, but straight
640x480 VGA doesn't really cut it.

As for the Beta release of OS/2 2.0 being available for the general
public, first IBM said they would, then they said they wouldn't, and
now there's a really big ruckus going on with people inside saying
"oh great, first we promise the moon and then say 'maybe later'; if
we keep this up we're not going to do very well convincing our
customers that we're serious about change." But it seems someone
(lawyers?) is concerned about the little bits of Microsoft code still
lying around, and does IBM have the right to give it away? (Even
though Microsoft has had next to nothing to do with the development
of 2.0, there's still some of "their" code left around in parts of
it.)
