I am currently in the throes of setting up a highly interactive local-talk network that will rely heavily on distributed word-processing and file access. We plan to have roughly 10 client stations and a dedicated fileserver (of a type as yet undetermined, but likely to be a IICX). My problem is that our users will be _frequently_ accessing the fileserver. In fact, I fully expect users to avoid download of resident files. Rather, client stations will run their own word-processors but edit the files from remote. Worse, it seems my only alternative at this time is to set up BOTH Tops and Appleshare (I must have full access to all machines for backup of remote HDs, and I must also have an integrated group privelege system), so their will be additional overhead. My questions are these: What sort of bottleneck should I expect? Will the bottleneck be at the server or through localtalk? Should I use a mac fileserver, or should I consider a more powerful workstation like a SUN? And lastly, Are IO ACCELERATORS for the Mac a developed market, are they fast and _reliable_, would they help a fileserver, and is it a viable option at all ??? THANXS out there, please respond with mail (it gets my ATTENTION, sirrah) * * "Think, imagine, feel" are words like good and evil; * they mean what you choose them to mean - and nothing more. * If you define them, they fall apart. * INTERNET: joe@amos.ling.ucsd.edu RELAY: joe%amos.ling.ucsd.edu@relay.cs.net BITNET: joe%amos@ucsd.bitnet UUCP: ucbvax!sdcsvax!sdamos!joe
