[comp.sys.mac.hardware] What's a Mac 512 worth?? Seriously.....

kingman@tci.bell-atl.com (Matt Kingman) (10/18/89)

Alright, no jokes please. I'm doing some AppleTalk development and a
friend of mine has a Mac 512 that he'd be willing to part with. Since
I can get a brand new Mac Plus for $900 (Developer price), I told him
I'd give him $200 for it (he doesn't use it, he's buying a IIci).
Is this reasonable? Is it worth more or nothing? Anybody know how much
it would cost to upgrade it to a Plus?

Thanks
/Matt

I believe it can be upgraded to a plus for about $700. Since you
can get pluses for $900, it isn't worth it to you to pay him $200.
He should try to sell it in the want ads to someone who has to pay
retail for the plus (about $1200 or so in NYC), or to someone who
doesn't want to ever upgrade.

I think I saw a price of $450 as the value of a 512. There are companies
that buy used equipment and resell them. Several were listed in the
article. It seems like one or two were back east and one was in the
midwest (not very helpful, I know). Sun Remarketing was mentioned too,
but the article was rather positive about the booming business in
reselling.

My 512 has been upgraded to 2 megs and has a SCSI port so I'm not parting
with it for that kind of money. I figured I could use it to do some
slow tasks (like Thunderscan) while I was using the SE/30 for something
else. Also, I could use the ROM in a portable maybe? (I know they had to
put in a new one when they upgraded it a couple years ago.)
