My external floppy drive had a problem with ejecting disks, I
understand that it is fairly common.

I fixed mine myself. The problem was in 2 parts; first there is a
spring that actually ejects the diskette. In my drive this spring
lost it's strength, so I replaced it with a new one. Second the
transfer mechanism had some grease in a few places that was very
thick and sticky, this made the spings job even more difficult. I
removed the old grease and relubed it. now it works fine. If you
take the drive apart it is very obvious how it works, you should be
able to see what is wrong very easily.
