[comp.sys.mac.hardware] drive problems...

Ok, I just started reading this group 2 weeks ago, and good thing too,
because 5 days ago, my internal 40(macII) started
1) 'losing' folder contents ('that file/folder cannot be found' error).
2) refusing to start.
3) making it past the inits, and then getting a 'unable to load finder' error.

So, two questions come to mind... firstly, does this sound like the sorts
of errors that a sticky quantum generates? (I initially thought virus, and
reformatted the entire thing, but that hasn't helped... I still can only get
a good startup about 1/5 of the time)
secondly, I have heard lots of complaints about the rom replacement version
of 'repair' for the drive, but has anyone tried fixing the *problem* with
the drives, and not the *symptoms*? i.e. is it possible to crack the things
open, and relubricate the access arm, hopefully with something that will
behave more reasonably than the origional?

Thanks for the info, esp. if this has already been hashed over.
