[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Any opinions on Prometheus 2400 FaxModem?

carlo@zebra.cvs.rochester.edu (Carlo Tiana) (11/15/89)

Does anyone have any experience with faxmodems in general, and in
particular the one from Prometheus? These beasties are combined modems
(usually 2400) and pseudo-fax machines: they can send (and mostly receive
-- but see below) fax documents that are already "in your Mac". They lack
the digitizer that's needed for scanning documents, which fax machines
usually have. Since often one wants to send computer generated documents,
this seems like a good idea. They usually cost (I think) around $500+.

BUT there is a Prometheus faxmodem (external) that sells for $299.- (compare
with the 2400BPS straight modem from the same manufacturers at $199.-)
which comes with BackFax (a software package for fax, liked by MacUser,
8/89 and retailing then for $245.-) and Macknowledge (comm. software) and
can act as a data modem at 2400BPS and fax machine SEND ONLY at 2400BPS
also. Does anyone have one of these? Is the fact that you can't receive
limiting enough that it's not worth the additional $100.- on top of the
modem price to just be able to send fax? I have to buy a modem anyway, so
the additional cost would be small, but is it worth it anyway?

Finally, fax aside, does anyone have any strong opinions/suggestions about
2400BPS modems in general?

Thank you.
Carlo
