[comp.sys.mac.hardware] FaxModem Recommendations ?

scb1@tank.uchicago.edu (Sam Blackman) (11/17/89)

Does anybody out there know of, or even better, recommend a particular
fax modem for the Macintosh ? I've used the AppleFax modem and was not
particularly impressed (both before and after the ROM upgrades) ... also,
if you happen to love a particular piece of related software (i.e.
BackFax, etc.) I'd be interested in knowing.

Thanks much for you help !!

Sam

The most recent MacWeek - 14th November - page 14 has an ad by Prometheus
on their ProModem Data/Fax modem for $299.

The picture show a modem hooked up to a Murata M1200 which printing out
an incomming fax.

The ad says MAcKnowledge is included and also mentions BackFAX but doesn't
say BackFAX is included.

I also saw that - so I called them up and asked what I thought was rather a
stupid question i.e. "can it RECEIVE fax?". The ad does not mention
reception anywhere. The answer was "No, Sir, send only." Beats me why they
would do this.

I am still debating whether I want to have something that can send only.
After all, if you fax something somewhere, they may want to fax back a
reply. On the otehr hand, yes they do bundle MacKnowledge and BackFax, the
latter having received rather favorable comments in MacUser, August (I
think). Each can be bought for about $120.-, so the whole deal may be even
worth it anyway; Prometheus' 2400bps modem sells for about $199.- anyway,
and for $100.- extra you get fax-sending and some software (potentially
useful if you do buy a receive-also fax card soon).

Does anyone have this 1/2fax-modem and care to comment on it?
Does anyone have other fax-modems and care to give us their impressions,
what they wish they had, what they don't care for much?

Carlo.
