[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Sick MacSE 20MG hard drive

EGERSHON@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu (11/27/89)

This is my first time posting.

I have a sick hard disk and need some advice. I am using Kermit
from a floppy right now.

The hard disk is the 20MB which came as the internal hard disk for the Mac SE I bought a year ago. What it is doing, and has done
once before, is this. It runs fine for several weeks, then makes
an unusual noise, for it, crashes, and then when I try to reboot,
can't fine the hard disk icon.

When I reboot, it gives me the disk with a question mark in it. It
boots from floppies just fine, although a little slow. After
booting from the floppy, the program runs fine, while the light
on the hard disk continues to flash.

I cannot find the hard disk with Symantec Utilities or with the
System installer. I just get the floppy as the option and no
hard disk to choose. SUM can't find the hard disk under any
option. And it keeps flashing away.

The last time it did this, it was down for a week or so and then
came back and stayed fine for several weeks. I took it in for
diagnostics and was told everything was fine.

Any suggestions on how to fix, whether to fix, what's going on,
etc. are welcome. Please e-mail. If I have to replace the
internal hard-disk I would be interested in people's experience
getting a replacement hard-drive. Should I replace with another
internal or an external? Why? I have read about many problems
with many companies in this newsgroup. What are people's
opinions on a good reliable company making a good reliable hard
drive preferably with a long warranty? Cost is a concern.

If this does get posted successfully, and anyone is interested
I would be willing to summarize to the net, assuming I can
figure out how to do it a second time.

Evy

Some drives signals an error condition via the LED, more or less like
morse.

Not knowing whether or not your drive does this I'd say get hold of
the info for your drive and be prepared the next time it happens.
