[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Sony Multiscan woes

[Is this the right group? Well, it's one of the righter ones...]

I have a Sony CDP-1302 multiscanning monitor (that's the multi-frequency
version of Apple's standard color monitor). It's almost a year old, and it's
beginning to give me grief.

Symptom 1: When the monitor heats up, the brightness goes up, automatically.
Black turns into washy grey, and I have to turn the brightness down all the way
to get a black that looks anything close to black. That one I can live with
(just barely...).

Symptom 2: (This one's new) When the monitor heats up enough, something
snaps (metaphorically) and the picture is gone. Turning the thing off and
back on cures it for a while, then *snap* it's black again. If it gets
hot enough, all that turning it off and back on gives me, is a very bright
brief wavy line across the screen, and *snap* it's black again. Very ennoying,
as you can imagine.

This problem is definitely heat related. It only happens if the room is
relatively warm (>65F or so), and after the monitor was running for some
time. Removing the cover and running the thing "naked" helps some, but only
delays the problem. Fanning air into the open case helps some, too; but I'd
rather not clamp a fan on my monitor :-).

The store where I bought the thing says 4-6 weeks repair time (they send it
to Sony, they say), and no guarantees on cost. It's out of ordinary warranty
(90 days P&L, Apple-like). There's a 2-year warranty on the tube, but what
do you want to bet it isn't the tube, and besides they'd get me under "labor"
anyway.

I thought before I enter this service adventure, I might ask for similar
experiences from other owners of this monitor. Is there a simple thing
broken? A specific part? Anything I can do, other than abandon it (and my
credit card) to the vagaries of Sony service, or give up and buy a new monitor?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
