[comp.sys.mac.hardware] SE/30 Failure - "Test Monitor"

cayz@udel.edu (James Cayz) (12/08/89)

Hi All,

One of the professors on the floor has an SE/30 (w/ internal HD)
with a peculiar problem... Upon plugging it in, and turning it on, the screen
displays a checkboard-like pattern (looks like 4x4 pixel blocks, alternating
black and white, with with a middle (vertical) band (1/3 the screen width) that
has every other white block turned black. Now, I know that Diagnostic Sound
Sampler was designed for the Mac II, but I figured this may help in this case,
so read on...

At the same time this very bizarre pattern appears, the "sour" chord
plays, followed by three increasing tones. Digging out "Diagnostic Sound
Sampler", I determined that the first chord is the "Failed Initial Hardware"
sound, and the next three are the ones plaued for "Test Monitor". Now, the
text that appears in Diagnostic Sound Sampler when you click in Test Monitor is
"This sound indicates that the Macintosh II has entered the Test Monitor". It
sounds like "Test Monitor" is some sort of mode that a technician can enter to
do something (maybe test monitor consistancy?)... I don't know, I'm not a
technician.... But, does _someone_ know what this means? Is it something
repairable (like, "hit Option, Clover, Shift, Tab, Enter, and roll the mouse in
counterclockwise circles while double-clicking to exit Test Monitor")
Obviously, the CRT is fine (unless the display is supposed to be all white :-)
)... Also, _there_is_no_other_sound_played before the 3 tones (which would
indicate a RAM failure, if DSS is correct!).

Please, Please, Please send me direct E-mail, since I have millions of
newgroup articles to read, and won't get to the new ones until at least
Monday!!! (Vacations are a bummer!)... I will summarize if I find a working
solution, and post to the net...

						Thanx in Advance,
						James Cayz
