Space shuttle Challenger touched down at Edwards Air Force Base in California
today (6 November 1985) at 17:45 GMT (09:45 PST), seven days and 45 minutes
after it lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Spacelab D-1, as the
mission was also called, was pronounced to be extremely successful with no
major problems in any of the orbiter's systems. This success was almost
matched by the 75 or so experiments carried within the European Space Agency
Spacelab module. Mission commander Henry Hartsfield was to test a new nose
wheel steering system upon landing today to replace the differential braking
technique that has been used on all shuttle landings in the past. There is
no word yet on how well that test went.
