I've just purchased several boxes of Sony HD floppy disks. Each box came with an 11th disk - a demo of Lotus 1-2-3 for *PCs*. Having no occasion for using PC-DOS machines, I immediately thought ... "Great, I'll just reformat these disks and use them in my Mac." No such luck. Lotus/Sony produced these demo disks without any write protect tab (the hole and slot are there, just no little black tab in the slot to slide up and down). Is it safe (for my IIcx "superdrive") to cover the write-protect hole with opaque tape and use the disks? (The base question is whether the drive uses a mechanical sensor that will be buggered up by tape, or whether it uses an optical sensor that doesn't touch anything?) Thanks in advance for any help. Wouldn't want these floppies turned into coasters before their time.
