Howdy All, I received many responses to my original message about Test Monitor... None of which explained what Test Monitor was, or how to get out of it. However, on the suggestion of a few people, I did try moving the RAM around (2M, 8 256K chips). Well, I tried the obvious first - move Bank A to Bank B, and re-boot.. Got the "OK" chord, then 2 ascending chords, then 3 asc. chords, then (a different screen pattern, but still - ) Test Monitor. At this time, I figured it was a RAM chip gone south, and sure enough, it was.... Thank god I still had extras from all those other RAM upgrades I've done :-) .. Anyway, it does seem that you no longer get the sad face mac for bad memory in the SE/30 (MacII also)... Just gotta "play it by ear" (awwwh, bad pun....)... Thanx to everybody who replied..... James
