[comp.sys.mac.hardware] LaCie? LaCie? LaCie HARD DRIVES?

soules@ecs.umass.edu (01/03/90)

Hello MacPlanet,

I'm considering buying the LaCie 42MB hard drive (27ms)
for $599.

I'd appreciate any comments about the drive.
It got good reviews, but I haven't heard any
1st person accounts.

Any comments on whether I should spend $100 more
to get the 15ms version?

What guts does LaCie use? Connor? Quantum?

The 15 ms version I know is a Quantum Since I have one. I really do like it and
I like the drive software and utilities that come with it (for the externals
you alsow get a padded carry case). One other thing to consider is that the
drives that Lacie sells that have the quantums in them now come with (I
beleive) a 5 year waranty. Compare that to Apples 90 day warranty for the
almost exact same drive (I day almost because the quantums that Apple uses have
had the firmware in them altered slightly so that they use apples driver. Stock
Quantums won't work with Apple's drivers).

I really like it and if I had the money, I would buy an 80M from them. I also
like their support (800 number).

hope this helps

Well, I don't know about their smaller drives. I have one
of their larger ones... no problems so far with the drive
(it's a CDC Wren). Their formatting software is rather
better than apple's. It can handle multiple mac partitions
as well as AUX. Additionally, they provide a localtalk disk
sharing system, somewhat similar to tops. They promise that
some day they will have printer sharing software out
(free to drive purchasers). Still waiting for it. My only
complaint was that they changed to a different brand of
drive just after I purchased mine -- now they offer a 5
year warrenty (I have only a 2 year warrenty).
