Can someone out there shed some light on disk drive mechanisms? (1) I have been looking for an inexpensive 40Mb (more or less) drive for a friend. Several companies have drives built around Seagate ST157N drives. I have been told that they have access speeds of 23ms, 28ms, and 40ms by different companies. Which is correct? Are these drives any good? Is the 70,000 hour MTBF figure accurate? (2) I have heard many complaints about the quantum prodrives (40Mb and 80Mb), but have also been told that these are the best mechanisms on the market. Recently, one packager of drives told me that the problems with the quantums are *ONLY* with the ones supplied by Apple, and that the problems are due to custom roms that apple has Quantum install. Is this true? Are the "generic" Quantum drives still considered to be very good? (3) One company is offering a very cheap 45Mb drive with a 21ms Connor drive. Any comments on this mechanism? (4) Does anyone know of a reliable 40-45Mb drive that costs less than $499.00? Reply by email and I'll summarize to the net. --Walter _____________________________________________________________________________ Walter C3arlip c3ar@zaphod.uchicago.edu (the "3" is silent) c3ar%zaphod@UCHIMVS1.bitnet _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ Walter C3arlip c3ar@zaphod.uchicago.edu (the "3" is silent) c3ar%zaphod@UCHIMVS1.bitnet _____________________________________________________________________________
