[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Hacking a 128k Mac into a Mac+

bfc@hpislx.HP.COM (Bryan Carpenter) (01/12/90)

I have an original Mac that started its life as a 128k. I did the Dr. Dobbs
upgrade to 512k, then the 512e upgrade to get 128k ROMs and 800k drive.
I then upgraded the RAM again by piggybacking another 16 256k RAMS on top
of the original 16. I added a Supermac SCSI adapter to connect a hard drive.

As far as I know, I now have a Mac+ equivalent except for one thing. I still
have the original battery-backed parameter RAM, and from what I've heard,
The Mac+ went to one with more capacity. Does anyone know whether there's
any way to obtain a Mac+ equivalent parameter RAM that I could substitute in
or whether there's some way to add a circuit to emulate the larger RAM?

I am currently contemplating adding more RAM to my machine so I can keep up
with the memory requirements of modern Mac software and system 7, but I have
this nagging feeling that the parameter RAM issue is going to bite me one of
these days.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There is an init called PRAM 1.01 that has allowed my 512ke to work with
the Sound CDEV and the Map CDEV that comes with system 6.04 . There is also
an init which I forgot the name of version 5.0 thats suposed to do the same.
PRAM is available on better BBSs or I could send out a copy.
