[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Old 512K mac video problems.

dcbii@ncrcae.Columbia.NCR.COM (dcbii) (01/19/90)

I have an old 512K mac that I have had for about 4 1/2 years. During that
time the screen would occasionally go crazy, either distorting the image on
the screen, or even looking completely out of sync. As I did not have Apple
Care and could not afford the prices the local mac shops wanted just to look
at it, I found a solution that was effective -- a sharp bang on the left side
always took care of the problem, usually for several months.

Now I have a different problem that is very similar. After the machine has
been left on a while, the video will go completely blank at random intervals,
and then sometime later, i.e. 15 min. to 2 hours later, the video will come
back. Unfortunately, banging on the side only makes the video flash, not
come back. I could probably afford to have it fixed, but I don't know if
it's worth it for that machine. Before I take it into the shop, however,
can anyone tell me what the problem might be, and if it will most likely be
expensive?

Any information is appreciated.
