[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Problems with the Apple mouse

jtn@potomac.ads.com (John T. Nelson) (02/06/90)

I've noticed something rather odd about my Apple Macintosh mouse. If
I position the cursor at the top of my screen and then move it quickly
down and then to the right, lifting the mouse slightly above the pad
as I do... the cursor will jet in a straight line to the right-hand
side of the screen and stop.

Is this a software problem or is the ball inside the mouse that
frictionless? Or is the mouse sensing hardware defective in some way?
It doesn't seem to do this on the mice at work but upon closer
examination it looks like the ball in the mouse at work is bigger than
the one at home.

Hmmmm.... is Apple cutting corners or something?

Here is what is happenning:

When the mouse is down on the table the ball inside the mouse is
pushed up into the casing slightly so the ball comes into good contact with
the three rollers on the inside. When you lift the mouse up off of the table,
the ball drops back down to rest directly on the retaining ring. In the
process of it falling down, it almost always rolls the rollers a little.
It usually produces a diagonal effect.
