I recently purchased a couple of 1 meg simm's to put in my SE. I put them in the back slots and put two of my 256K simms in the front, snipped my R35 resistor, and put everything back to where its supposed to go (ie. hard drive cable, disk drive cable in the lower drive slot, speaker and video cables in there respective slots) I did this while being grounded by the standard wrist strap, etc. Now when I turn on my machine I get a checker board pattern (squares roughly 1cmx1cm) and the desktop does not appear (&%$$#$% machine !!!!). The hard drive seems to boot, and I believe that the system loads in because; 1) the happy face mac appears on bootup as an icon in the middle of the screen; 2) if I put a disk in I can eject it by command-shift-1; 3) I have a Macromaker Macro to shut down the computer (command-f12) and if I do this right now the disk drive blinks a little and then stops, exactly as I remember it to do when my machine USED to work properly. I've also checked ALL my memory chips in a friends IIcx and they ALL work perfectly on his machine, so i've ruled out that possibility as well. I've even tried putting them in several times to make sure they are sitting properly. Does anybody out there know whats wrong? I'm clueless. ANY info would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I figured out my own problem. I was using old instructions that I had got from a friend that pre-dated Mac-SE where you have to remove a jumper, not cut the R35 resistor. I resoldered the resistor, took out the jumper, and put the 1 Meg SIMMs in slots 3 and four (256Ks in slots 1 and 2). Now everything works perfectly. Boy, I feel stupid. Pete
