[comp.sys.mac.hardware] SE/30 upgrade

cht@athena.mit.edu (Chester Liu) (02/13/90)

Here's a question for y'all who know about the SE/30 upgrade:

Is it better if I shell out $1300 for a SE/30 upgrade (university
discount), or should I get a '030 16MHz accelerator board (such as
the $700 by Gemini)?

As far as I know, the pro's for the SE/30 upgrade is that I
get the Color QuickDraw ROM routines and the Direct Slot expansion
port. The con's are that I have to spend at least $500 more for the
Apple upgrade, and that the local Apple repairman said he's seen
many third-party boards die in 1 year.

Please give me your opinion taking into consideration
price/value/performance, and future upgrade possibilities.

	Thanks,
	Chester Liu

A couple of things you are forgetting. The SCSI port in SE/30 is
faster than the SE's. Also, most accelerator boards don't come with a math
chip. (at least when I was looking)
Have you looked at the cost of selling your SE and buying a new SE/30.
Apple just dropped their education prices on the SE/30 (and SE too). When I
did it 6 months ago I was able to sell mine and buy a new machine for about
$1600. Obviously that depends alot on what you can get for your SE. I sold
mine before they announced the new SE/FDHD.

				Have fun
