When I was buying my Mac back in 1988, I gave serious thought to buying a 45MB removable drive. I decided against it because they were a new thing and I just wasn't sure how they would work out. Now, they seem to be pretty popular and very available, and I would like to get away from floppy backups. My only experience with one of these units came last week. After a bunch of machine crashes and formatting problems, it turned out that the unit was broken (it had been broken for months, but nobody had taken the time to test it and return it for diagnostics and repair). Just how reliable are these drives now? A warranty is a great thing when you have problems, but it's still a pain to lose the use of a piece of equipment for a couple of weeks. Also, the drive I just sent back apparently had power supply problems, and the technician told me that it may not recognize disks formatted before. Are the drive mechanisms that unstable? Finally, if I buy one of these drives, how can I be sure that I have one of the "new" (20ms, 30,000hr MTBF) mechanisms? -- David Elliott dce@smsc.sony.com | ...!{uunet,mips}!sonyusa!dce (408)944-4073
