Over the weekend, I picked up a new shareware ($25) INIT called MaxAppleZoom. It reprograms the Mac II video card to change it from 640x480 to 704x512, thus using the unused memory in your video card. Note that this is *not* like Stepping Out II, which, though an excellent program, only simulates having a larger screen. I found that I had to squish the screen area in both directions a little to actually see all of the screen. The INIT works surprisingly well. Some programs (Solarian II) don't make use of the extra area. Others (Tetris, Brickles Plus) become sluggish. Also, I was unable to get it to work with a Mac IIcx at work. The only complaint I have is that I have to stretch out all of my background screens. Hmm, maybe a variant on the Black Box theme would work. That way, one could have a standard 640x480 screen with a 512x64 and a 640x32 (or 480x64 and 704x32) strip with icons, buttons, application tabs, clocks, and what have you. Make it more configurable than Black Box and I might even use it... -- David Elliott dce@smsc.sony.com | ...!{uunet,mips}!sonyusa!dce (408)944-4073
