[comp.sys.mac.hardware] MAC+ Power Supply Question

proctor@ingr.com (John Proctor) (02/23/90)

I have just added a MicroNet MP-46 (Seagate 157N drive) to my relatively
new MAC+ (5 months old). I opted to use the floppy drive cable power
supply as it was cheaper:-) The question is as follows:

	1) What is the MAC+ power supply capable of delivering (watts)

	2) What is the demand (watts) on the supply from the MAC+ itself

It seems to work ok except that the drive does not become ready fast
enought to boot off it upon powering up. I must still press the reset to
get it to boot. With all the horror stories on the net about the MAC+
power supply I wonder if I did the right thing. Any comments?

Quote from Inside Macintosh volume III, pg 33:

"Warning: This connector was designed for a Macintosh 3 1/2-inch disk drive,
which represents a load of 500 milliamps at +12 volts, 500 milliamps at +5
volts, and 0 milliamps at -12 volts. If any other device uses this connector,
it must not exceed these loads by more than 100 milliamps at +12 volts,
200 milliamps at +5 volts, and 10 milliamps at -12 volts, including loads
from all other connectors combined."

I have a Quantum ProDrive 80S (8 watts) powered from this connector,
works like a dream.
I did have to re-solder the flyback transformer and connectors on the
video/power supply board. This doesn't have anything to do with using
the PS to drive the winnie.
