Not too long ago, someone posted to comp.newprod about a new system utilizing both hardware and software that allowed an HP LaserJet to be driven by a Postscript application from the Mac. It also, as I recall, achieved higher resolution on the printer than normal, 400 dpi ona nominally 300 dpi machine.
