[comp.sys.mac.hardware] SE30 Video Card Summary

jackiw@cs.swarthmore.edu (Nick Jackiw) (03/07/90)

Here's a summary of replies to my question about SE30 vid cards.

I should note the following:

o SuperMac gave me a four-day runaround before being able to give me
the phone # of someone there who knew anything about their developer
pricing policies. One of my respondants said he waited 2 months for
them to deliver (allegedly, they shipped to the wrong address).

o RasterOps sales support has no knowledge of an SE/30 compatible
system which they produce for less than $4500 list. This is ridiculous,
as their ads (and respondants, below) claim otherwise.

o MacZone stocks the micron for about $385; MacConnection will be
stocking it RSN (estimate: 10 days) for about $355.

I'd recommend going with mail-order, if you can, as these companies know
what they have to sell and want to sell it, unlike the manufacturers
themselves.

I just received my SuMac colorcard se/30 yesterday, and plugged it
in with an apple 13" color video. So far it is working well. It has
an interesting feature that you can set the card in 1-bit mode to have
a virtual desktop that is about as big as my real desktop (1000 x 2000
pixels). Might be useful for working on big b/w drawings.

I've been using the Micron Technology SE/30 video card for 2 months
now, with great results. The installation was easy, and I've had no
software or hardware compatibility problems. I use the card with an
NEC Multisync monitor (I previously used it with an IBM PC), so it was
necessary to contruct my own cable adapter, but I foresee no problems
using it with the Apple monitor. As you would expect, when you add
the card, you can now use two monitors side-by-side.

In summary, I'd recommend the Micron card because of its price and
quality.

Greetings!

I did hear that RasterOps was releas-
ing an 8-bit card for the SE/30 next month retailing I think around $500.

If the card you are talking about actually is good, I may actually get one.
I've been considering the Ehman 2 page display since it runs $899 for
card plus monitor.

I have no first-hand experience, but RasterOps is advertising a <$500
8-bit card which can be upped to a 24-bit card cheaply. I don't know
if it's for the SE/30 or just the II, but it's worth giving them a call.
Check the latest (MacWeek? MacWorld?)

Consider the RasterOps 264 card for the SE/30. Retail for $995.
Mail order $695. 8 bit and 24 bit color. I just installed one with
a Sony 1304 monitor. (Apple 13" compatible). It works and looks
beautiful. I am using it with Illustrator, Pagemaker, Super 3D,
Photoshop, Superpaint, etc.
