[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Questions about ESDI-SCSI controllers and formatters

jjw7384@ultb.isc.rit.edu (Jeff Wasilko) (03/11/90)

I'm looking for recomendations for ESDI-SCSI controllers. I've recently
inherited a Control Data (actually Magnetic Peripherals) drive that I'm
assuming is ESDI. The model number is 94166-182 and the flag track
sticker says it was manufactured in December of 1987. If anyone knows that
this ISN'T an ESDI drive, let me know (I'm waiting on a call back from
CD for the physical specs of the drive).

Anyway, I'm looking for tips/suggestions/sources for the controller,
case/power supply and formatting/driver software.

I have had experience with the MD21 (Emulex?) controllers from the Sun
world, but I haven't had any dealings with them recently. I know that
both Adaptec and Emulex make controllers, but I've got know idea which
controllers will work out best in a Macintosh application.

I have dealt with Tulin for cases/power supplies, but I don't know of
anyone else in this area. I'll need a case with enough room for a
full-height 5 1/4" drive.

As far as formatters/drivers, I've only heard of Ephraim Vishniac's SCSI
Formatter and SilverLining from LaCie. I have heard that SCSI Formatter
will work with an MD21, but I've got no idea about SilverLining.

Thanks in advance for any info. I'll summarize any info I get along with
my progress on getting this thing up and running.

Thanks,

Jeff
