I'm using a 44mb Bernoulli removable disk for
backup. My 105MB disk is partitioned with 2
partitions that are exactly the same size as
a bernoulli, and to do a backup of a
partition, I erase the bernoulli cartridge,
then copy all with the Finder. There is a
3rd 16MB partition that I don't back up. I
use it for scratch space. Soon in 7.0, I'll
use it for virtual memory. Best part is when
I want to retrieve something from the backup
I just mount the disk and use Finder.

Syquest removables can crash. Bernoullis
can't. Gives one a nice secure feeling for
a backup medium. Tape is too slow, and you
can't just mount it and get stuff off of it
quickly like a disk. Furthermore, I think
all 3 of the major backup software packages
I've seen are just too squirrely. Finder is
fine for full backups.

Bernoulli software and documentation are
excellent, hardware seems fine, except that
there is a fan that stays on even when there
is no activity, and if you turn the unit off
the SCSI bus goes dead because the power to
the terminators is lost. So, when I'm not
using the Bernoulli, I unplug the SCSI and
leave it off. Also, the drive is too loud to
use all the time unless you are in a noisy
environment.

I use 45Meg Syquest drives.

Sure is, if your running it by itself. As far as I know Finder does not
use the MultiFinder Temporary Memory, so if you havent changed the default
160k setting that Finder asks for, your not going to be able to copy large
directory structures or numbers of files. In either case your stuck to
waiting for the Finder to complete the job.

The system I have is based on the MPWv3.0 "Backup" tool. Each morning I
backup 180Mb of server disk space onto a series of 4 Syquest cartriges.
The process takes about ten miniutes, and goes about its business in the
background. While Im reading the news, MPW uses the notification manager to
bring my attention to the script when a new disk is required.

Ive been using this process for 11 months, and find the Syquest media
perfectly suited.
