[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Apple is replacing defective 40Meg Seagate drives

I talked with a local dealer friday, and was told that there are problems
with Seagate 40 Meg Drives (apple ones, I think) with bar code label
numbers 0035507 through 1250863. My drive fell into that category,
and it is being replaced sometime this week; the dealer says that it
will most likely be a Quantum.
The problem with the Seagates is (I am told) the same problem as
the Quantums had -- the sticking problem. I noticed that the
drive controller board has no socketed IC's -- it's all surface
mount, so I guess that they would be unable to do an easy ROM upgrade
as Quantum did. The whole unit has to be shipped back to Apple.

Thank god I have a recent backup!

This is a test of the emergency signature system. Were this an actual
signature, you would see amusing mottos, disclaimers, a zillion net
addresses, or edifying philisophical statements. This is only a test.

Does this apply even if your Mac is out of warranty? I have a
six month old SE with the above drive. The hard drive is flakey.
Once after being shut off for a day, the hard drive refused to
spin-up. A hard slap fixed that, however. It still looks as though
it has trouble coming up from a cold boot. Am I living on borrowed
time? (Lessee here....my Mac is six months old....hmmmm.....guess
it's been six months since my last backup.....)
