[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Mac II reset switches????

mjkobb@mit-amt.MEDIA.MIT.EDU (Michael J Kobb) (03/23/90)

Greetings,

Does anybody know where I can find a reset switch for a Mac II? Somehow, the
switch for the Mac II which I use at work became misplaced, and it's a major
hassle (since my software is crashing a lot these days....).

Thanks,

You can order one from an Apple dealer, it runs about $2.

Thanks. I guess I've just got the wrong dealer. MIT's microcomputer center
said "Nope. We don't have 'em." No offer to order; nothing. They did refer
me to ComputerLand, and the guy said he had one, so I went to pick it up.
Turns out it's for an SE. He gave it to me free, so I can hardly complain,
but now I've got to go hunting again...

Mailorder would be simplest. Does anybody know a mailorder place that would
have it?

Wait. The SE Programmer's Switch looks just like the one that came with
my Mac II. On a II, it's installed on the right, not the left, but they are
otherwise identical as far as I could tell. Are they different sizes or
something?
The IIcx and IIci use a different one, though.

The SE and the II/IIx switch looks the same from the front (except that the
triangle is pointing the other way), but the little brackets and clips and
things that hold it into the grating on the computer are in a different
configuration, so a Mac SE switch won't fit into the case on a II. I don't
know if it's the same the other way, but I wouldn't be particularly surprised.
I've got a line on another place that is willing to give me one free now, so
I'll see if they've got the right one. (I ripped the switch off of my
personal IIx to see what it looks like, so I'll KNOW).

Mike, you could install the ProgrammersKey init in your System Folder. This init
will allow you to reset or shutdown your Mac from the keyboard. MacsBug might
be good if you are crashing alot.
Worst case scenerio, I'll send you a reset switch for your MacII. Let me know.

Thanks very much to Paul and everybody else who replied to my question. A
number of people suggested the ProgrammersKey init, but I'm not sure I want to
have that rather than the actual switch, since when the Mac is crashing, it's
going down bigtime (freezes MacsBug, even). I'm not sure how well an init is
going to work in this state. Furthermore, on my IIx, I have the DataDesk 101
keyboard, which doesn't have the powerup key (it's got a button, but I
understand that it has no keycode). I got the init anyway, and I'll probably
use it on the Mac at work, and maybe on mine if I switch to the Apple
keyboard, but I wanted the switch, too.

In that respect, I'm set, too, because I found a dealer who had one lying
around. He just gave it to me. I guess the moral is: ask a bunch of
dealers, until you find one who's got more of these things than he wants.
