Why don't you get a couple sets of those rechargeable batteries- Then you could
always be charging a set while you using another set ...

A hint: ALWAYS have Easy Access in your system folder. If your mouse
gives up, you can still hit cmd-shift-clear and enable it, and work
with only the keyboard. (To finish up and shut down safely)
