[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Printer Help

carl@tardis.Tymnet.COM (Carl Baltrunas) (04/11/90)

I've been scanning the c.s.m.* groups for the past 8 months or so looking for
information about printer driver information for the CITOH family of printers
which includes the ImageWriter and DEC LA-50. I have a Mac IIx and an LA-50
printer (which I have connected to a DEC Rainbow) that I would like to use on
my Mac. The LA-50 manual shows me all the nifty control sequences necessary
to print text and to print graphics.

A friend of mine has an Amiga 2000 and is using his DEC LA-50 to print both
text and graphics with no problems.

"Graphics as good as on an Apple Imagewriter!"

We've compared notes, and the Amiga people have a couple of really configurable
printer driver programs that let you setup the parameters and specify which of
the bits are printed in graphics mode, and whether they are horizontal or
vertical.

I can't believe that the Mac people don't have a collection of PD or Shareware
drivers for various "nearly identical to the Apple model" printers. So, I'm
putting out this request for information on drivers and such. Maybe *ALL* I
need is to change some internal jumper or switch on the printer logic board?

I know the printing mechanism is *close* if not the same as the imagewriter
but am unable to get anything but garbage from the standard drivers.

I've also written in THINK C 3.1 a little application "PrintText" which spits
out the straight ASCII text to the printer port, so I know the two pieces of
hardware can talk to one another. I don't want to RE-ENGINEER the low level
routines for the printer if I don't have to.

(ANYBODY with ANY information???)

E-Mail to carl@tardis.tymnet.com or carl@tymix.tymnet.com and I will
summarize if there is interest (or if I find out anything).
