[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Would a MacII motherboard be worth anything to anyone???

pa1743@sdcc13.ucsd.edu (Jethro Bodean) (04/10/90)

If I get the fx upgrade do you suppose the motherboard they take out
will be worth anything to offset the price of the uprage by a few
percent? Beacause I can sell my RAM for a few hundred and.... *8^)
Can I use my old 800K drive or do I have to get the FDHD at the same
time? *8^0

PS What the diff between FDHD and Superdrive??? Hardware and $$?

wrk@phobos.cis.ksu.edu (William R. Krempp) (04/10/90)

the motherboard would need to be given up as part of the upgrade. The only
thing you could salvage from the motherboard are the 'bell and whistle'
items you hav added (if anY) like MMU or Additional memory.

To my knowledge, the price that Apple quotes for the logic board upgrade
includes the return of your old logic board. At least, that was what it
sounded like when I checked out the SE->SE/30 upgrade. Please correct me
if I'm wrong, anyone.

They are the one and the same.

In Norway the give you back your old motherbourd and all other parts
when upgrading  SE -> SE/30.
I can't tell what they do in other parts of the world, but I can't think
of any reason for them to keep the old parts after an upgrade.

As I understand it, the old baord is traded in when you get the upgrade. That
means the RAM from that board is gone too.

The FDHD and Superdrive are the same thing (1.44 Meg floppy drive that reads
and writes 400K, 800K, and 1.44M Apple formats -- and -- (by using Apple File
Exchange software will also read and write IBM floppies, but I'm not sure what
formats) I'm not sure if this is included in the board swap price or if you
must have it, but I'll bet you'll want it.

Most companies that do this form of an upgrade, use the old machine
(after reconditioning) as a tax writeoff by donating them to schools and
other non-profit oganizations.

How can they possibly take away RAM that is no longer on the board?
The same goes for PMMUs, accelerators, etc...
