NASA has indicated willingness to accept contributions, but has hedged on whether it will apply them to the purposes they were meant for. I suspect that a large part of the reason for this is that voluntary contributions may not be sufficient to cover a replacement shuttle. If it would cost (say) $2 billion, and they receive (say) $10 million, what do they do? Build a cargo door or something? This is not to say that contributions to NASA should be discouraged. Anything that stretches their meager budget will help. But while you have your pen out, why not write to your Congresspeople? You'll likely leverage more funds with a few 22-cent stamps than with a big check to NASA. -- Bill Roman {ihnp4,decvax,allegra,...}!uw-beaver!tikal!sigma!roman Summation, Inc. 18702 142nd Ave NE Woodinville, WA 98072 (206) 486-0991
