I will admit that some of the people calling them 'service' technicians
aren't all there, but you cannot blame the Apple Dealer's Network for
that. They do not hire these people. It is the computer dealers
providing the support to blame for that.

The worst offenders are the grey market sales stores. You know, the
camera stores and such you sell computers. Ex: 42nd Street Photo. They
aren't even Apple authorized and people still buy from them.

If a dealer doesn't care enought to hire people who know what they are
doing or doesn't care enough to send his people to Apple service
training classes then he doesn't deserve to be in business.

I have been repairing computers for many years. I have seen good
technicians and bad technicians. The store I work for is excellent
becasue we won't hire anybody who isn't trained on equipment, and if we
do, we send them right off to training. An unauthorized tech is the
kiss of death in the computer business. It is very easy to establish a
great reputation in this business if you have good support people and
technicians. Brookhaven National Laboratories would even consider
signing our store up as its dealer until it saw our service lab.

My advice to all computer buyers out there:

Make sure that the store is authorized, it is very easy for the dealer
to produce verification.

Look at the walls in the store, dealers love to show off their
authorizations, if there aren't any on display, ask a salesperson to
tell you about their store and some of the work it has done.

If possible, ask to see the service department. If they don't have
one, I suggest don't buy a computer there. If they do, ask to see their
authorizations.
