[net.columbia] Reflections on TV Coverage

Concerning the TASS quote from Gus Hall:

I suppose if Bozo the Clown said the flight of Challenger was a Top Secret
military mission, TASS would print it too.

This kind of crap is typical of the Soviet propaganda machine. What is really
distressing is the way the American Press handled the Challenger incident: very
distastefully. I watched footage where a camera zooms in on Christa McAuliffe's
parents just after the explosion, both are obviously confused and unaware of
what has just happened. I have never seen anything quite as disturbing as
watching two people slowly realize their daughter has just been killed before
their very eyes.

For hours after the incident the T.V. viewer is assaulted by random and
unauthoritative speculation. I actually watched as one news anchor turned to
another and said, "Well Bob, what do you think happened?".
"Well Sam, I think the main fuel tank exploded."

If the subject were not so sad and horrible, the ludicrous exchange between
these two newsmen might have been funny.

                      "It's interesting when people die."
                      "Give 'em dirty laundry"
