[comp.sys.mac.hardware] ? about MacPlus ROMs and warning about PowerDrives

A friend of mine bought a PowerDrive 45 HD from Hard Drives International
recently. She was told over the phone that the drive would not work
properly on a MacPlus with old ROMs, but would work properly with a
platinum MacPlus , or any other Mac. I thought all MacPlus's had the same
ROMs. Is this wrong? Anyway, this drive is incredibly slow. When the
technical support at HDI were contacted about the problem, they didn't
seem to know much about Mac's and suggested resetting the interleave.
We set the interleave to 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 and at each setting DiskTimer II
reported that the drive was about as fast as an 800K floppy drive. We got
about the same result when the drive was tested on an SE. So the problem
doesn't seem to be with the MacPlus ROMs. At least HDI is being pretty
good about taking the drive back. The only cost to my friend will be the
return shipping. Anybody else had experience with PowerDrives? Are all
MacPlus ROMs the same? Thanks.
