Do the Apple hard disks automatically park their heads after issuance of the "Shut Down" command from the Finder or is a separate INIT/DA required to en- sure that this is down every shut down? The reason I am asking is that I saw a HD with Silverlining as its driver and after the user selected shut down a little dialog box popped up saying it was ok to turn off the computer and promising that the heads were parked... reply to the net or email Sam Hahn shahn@hstbme.mit.edu

It is a cdev (by the same person who wrote SoundMaster) that allows you to select which SCSI devices receive a 'PARK' command upon system shutdown. But this doesn't answer may original question...does APPLE have as part of its SCSI driver an automatic park command? If they do, then people with Apple HD Setup formatted drives wouldn't need to park their hard disks... Also, if I recall, some hard disk manufacturers have automatic head parking hard disks, regardless of the formatter used...

WHat is used is the Start/Stop unit command. On most drives this stops the spindle motor and retracts the heads to their reserved landing zone. The same command with a few bits changed can usually also be used to restart the motor. --dolf -- Dolf Starreveld Phone: +31 20 592 5056/5022 (FAX: 5155), TELEX: 10262 HEF NL EMAIL: dolf@fwi.uva.nl (dolf%fwi.uva.nl@hp4nl.nluug.nl) SNAIL: Dept. of Math. and Computing Science, University of Amsterdam, Kruislaan 409, NL-1098 SJ Amsterdam, The Netherlands
