[comp.sys.mac.hardware] two incompatible hard disks

I can't get my IIcx to work with both its internal 40Meg HD and
an external 45Meg MacBottom. There is not SCSI address conflict (the
MacBottom is set to 5, and the internal Apple HD is 0.) Here is the
situation in detail:

1) When you boot with the external drive on, the machine refuses to
acknowledge the presence of the internal HD. The system startup choice
does not show the internal. SCSI Tools does not find it either.
2) When you boot up with the external turned off, the cx shows thequestion
mark disk icon, i.e. it still doesn't know about the internal HD.
3) If you disconnect the external HD, everything is OK with the internal
HD.

I am running version 6.0.4 of the system with multifinder with 5 megs
of RAM. I've got zillions of inits and CDEVs but I suspect that is
irrelevant to what appears to be a hardware issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
