[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Spontaneous Reset

leo@duttnph.tudelft.nl (Leo Breebaart) (06/07/90)

I apologize in advance for bringing up a topic that I know has been
discussed previously - probably many times. Only, it wasn't my problem
then, so I never followed those threads. But now it *is* my problem,
and I would really like to get the advice from knowledgeable users on
the net, before sending my Mac out to be repaired.

The problem is as follows:
My Mac SE/30, 4Mb RAM, has been working perfectly for more than a year now.
Three weeks ago, I let a professional (but not one I can hold accountable,
it was a personal favour) install 4 additional 1Mb SIMMS, giving me the
grand total of 8 Mb.
Two weeks after that, my Mac started resetting itself spontaneously. At first
the resets were far apart, i.e. about one per session. But soon the intervals
between them grew shorter, and now I find that normal use is no longer
possible: the resets occur every five or six minutes.
Sometimes the screen just blinks, comes back up again, and everything still
works.
Sometimes the screen blinks, comes back up again, and everything is frozen.
Sometimes the screen goes black, and nothing works at all.
And sometimes the machine just goes 'Ping' and restarts.

My questions are:
1) What is causing this problem ?
1a) Can the memory expansion be the problem ?
1b) Or something that went wrong *during* the memory expansion ?
2) What is it going to take to fix this ?
2b) Is this something I can do myself, or do I need an expert ?
3) What is it going to cost me ?

Again, I apologize for bringing up something that I know has been discussed
before, but as you hopefully can understand, I am *very* distressed by all
of this, and would really really really appreciate any info or advice you
care to mail me.

Thanks,
