I think that the newsgroup for discussing space flight should be named after one of its most spectacular successes, rather than one of its most spectacular disasters. Would you change net.aviation to net.hindenburg or net.tenerife? Net.rec.boats to net.titanic? While we should learn from our failures, we should not allow them to blind us to our achievements.

I agree - let's leave it as net.columbia; because Columbia was the first, was victorious in its first mission and was celebrated around the world as a great triumph for the US and man's exploration of space. Those who so tragically died in the Challenger are certainly heroes of man's quest to touch the stars, as are all astronauts, and deserve to be remembered as such. The name net.columbia continues to commemorate man's hard but ultimately triumphant journey into space; to change to net.challenger would not honour our space heroes, both living and dead, as they deserve. But until Tuesday, the Challenger *was* one of its most spectacular successes. Perhaps a eulogy to the shuttle in addition to its crew is in order. I can only hope for one more belated and grim success, namely a renewed interest and commitment, both moral and financial, by our government and our people in the space program. One more vote for net.challenger. Or maybe net.challenger.7? ucbvax!brahms!weemba Matthew P Wiener/UCB Math Dept/Berkeley CA 94720

I agree, and am surprised that more people don't feel the same way. I strongly doubt that we will forget this incident, and I'm sure the Challenger will be referred to constantly in this group. It's one thing to put up a memorial, and it's another thing to name a discussion group after a tragedy.

Or maybe net.challenger.7? Do you propose renaming the newsgroup again if another shuttle goes up in flames?

Another vote against renaming. Incidentally, since (we) all seem to be posting here rather than net.news.whatever like we are supposed to, it might be polite to include the word rename somewhere in the subject line so that people who thought they were reading this group for information (:-)) can skip over the noise. What about the Lincoln Memorial. We would be honoring those who gave their lives for mankind. We should keep that day in our memories as much as we should keep the day of Lincoln's all-too-soon demise.

Thinking logically, the newsgroup should be called net.shuttle, or net.space.shuttle. Net.columbia and net.challenger do not adequately describe the contents of the newsgroup. Or should we have net.benz (instead of net.auto), net.k&r (instead of net.lang.c) and so on? Let's stick to names that describe the newsgroups. \tom haapanen watmath!watrose!haapanen I'm all lost in the Supermarket I can no longer shop happily I came in here for that special offer Guaranteed personality (c) The Clash, 1979

I AGREE. The people who died on the Challenger have more than a few memoriums dedicated to them. They will not be forgotten. If you want to some good and prevent another Challenger disaster, write your congressman or senator and get them to give NASA a workable budget. People like Senator Proxmire are as much to blame for the deaths of these people as any mechanical failure. Don't let them die in vain.

I agree with alice!ark and the rest who maintain that this group's name should remain net.columbia. Notice that the group isn't now named net.shuttle. I have no doubt that the folks who are suggesting that it be changed were not here when it was named net.columbia, and were not here through the several previous threats to change the name to something "more fitting." It's called net.columbia in memory of the first shuttle, and net.columbia it should stay. Period. If you want to go naming something net.challenger (or net.titanic, as has been suggested), then go name something new. This newsgroup's name already comemmorates something that deserves remembering. To change its name will be an affront to those of us who wish to continue the spirit in which this newsgroup was named. I was here when sjb wasn't a typo for srb.
