AH HA! It was the WDEF/a Virus that was messing up the desktop on the external drive! The guy who formatted it (out in Cal.) didn't know he had it! I got lucky, and casually scanned it - out of habit, and there it was... Removed it, and now both internal and external drives work OK with the IIci!
