Has anyone got one of the new MacAvenue disks. Macuser adds
shows 100 Mbytes for ~$700, external. This is a super deal!
Question is, are the drives worth a damn?

Considering that you can get a 12ms Quantum external for $699 from several places, I do not think the MacAvenue drive is a good deal. Since you are in Austin, there are a couple of places there to get good deals. MacClub for one. I would shop around.
