[comp.sys.mac.hardware] A few Question on HP DeskWriter

bclee@ocf.berkeley.edu (Bob C. Lee) (07/10/90)

I was shopping around for a printer to go with my Mac IIci
and saw the HP DeskWriter. I was quite impressed with the
quality of the output it produced. Now I am thinking of getting
one myself if you people out there can help me on a few questions
    I have.

	1. The printer is claimed to have a 300dpi resolution, is it
true? I am asking because it doesn't look quite as good.

	2. A stupid question, but being so ignorant, I'll have to
ask, does it come with a cable that I can use to connect
it to my Mac, or do I have to get it myself?

	3. Also, does it need special printer paper?

	4. Does it support PostScript? (I presume not.)

	5. Finally, what is the best price you have seen anywhere on
it? The best (the only, actually) price I see is $829.95
	   from J&R Music World.

Please reply via e-mail. I seldom read this group due to
laziness. Thanks a million in advance.

	G'day,

Yes it is 300 dpi. It also has a draft mode of 150 dpi. It only
comes with four outline fonts, which may be the source of the output
not looking as good as you expected. The output from mine while using
one of their fonts is (to my somewhat untrained eye) laserwriter quality.
With System 7 outline fonts (I have not yet tested this though), the
problem should go away.

Yes. It can also be put on a localtalk network.

Standard photocopier paper works best, but it can also use normal
computer paper if you tear of the tractor feeds and the perforations
(ran out of sheet paper one night!)

Not directly. There are some applications out that will allow
you to do the RIP on the Mac and send it to the Deskwriter. Freedom
of the Press springs to mind, although I think they could have done
the interface a bit better.

That looks about right. Check out a copy of MacUser, et al. I have
seen it advertised in there. Also, Several companies are comming out
with low end laserprinters. 4 ppm, 300 dpi @ about $1200-$1600.

I will point out one major disadvantage to the Deskwriter: The ink is
water soluable. They claim to be working on this, but I have not seen
the results yet.
